Dirk's pieces

Growth The art I made is about telling a story revert to growth and personal growth in live. About two years ago I made two paintings: one about emptiness and one about expressing, the third one I made this semester. For all the paintings is used words as a standpoint. The concept behind every painting was to evolve a written story or a lyric to a new stage. The white painting says, translated from Dutch: For the one a sad story, for the other reality. The yellow with orange en red painting says translated from Dutch: ‘’This is what you’ve gotta taste, don’t let anyone take it from you’’. The first mentioned lyric I wrote my own, the second lyric is from a guy I know. Both of these projects I made in the last month of the year 2011. The other painting is about growth and new insights. It’s made around a poem I wrote myself which I think most fitted in with the overall theme of the exposition: Sprouting / Growth. When writing the words of the poem I was already imagining a picture with it. In the bleu painting the feeling/expression of this image is been expressed and is based on this image I saw.

The Journey By Ruben

The concept behind my piece. (To become what the industry considers a professional artist you have to go through many layers of knowledge and experience.) In this piece I did called “The Journey” I wanted to portray the journey that an explorer has to take towards finding the exit of the cave. But during his journey he comes across different obstacles/sceneries in his path. At every checkpoint he observes and learns from his surroundings. But then he realise that he has to move on to continue towards exiting the cave. Everything is an obstacle, but also a learning point, which he must continue struggling and finding his way out towards his goal.

Creating thumbnails to decide the lay out of the composition and lighting.

Digital Painting phase

Step 1 Digital Imaging
After I chose my final composition I decided to trace over the lines in Photoshop to see the edges of my composition so I can start adding the colour on top

Step 2 Blocking in the colours
In this stage I started adding colours to the image roughly brushing in layers on layers of colours in order to picture colour combination.

Step 3 Smoothing the colours
In this stage started the precision working of smooth contrasting the colours on each other creating a bit of depth to the composition.

Step 4 Details and finalising the image
During the last step I went on adding the background by desaturating the background colours in order to make them seem far away and also adding a fine layer of atmosphere on it to mimic distance. I also added some mist on the in the foreground to create some atmosphere make it seem there’s a rain forest kind of vibe near the pyramid. For the light source and outside world I used some warmer colours colours to mimic sun rays.
